Digital Media: Photography and Graphic Arts

  • The DIGI program at Lincoln High School inspires creativity in photography, graphic design and illustration, introducing students to various skills to help them succeed in d.  Students will study photography, graphic design, illustration and animation while learning industry standard software.  They will explore design thinking and hone their problem-solving skills while completing individual and group projects.   All courses will incorporate hands-on and career related experiences in the form of real-world design challenges, field trips and visitors from the industry. Students who take three classes in the program become a program completer and have the opportunity to develop a capstone portfolio and participate in the DIGI co-lab, a student design and photography studio, engaging with actual clients.

  • Digital Photography 1/2

    10th-12th grades

    Digital Photography is a digital imaging and computer-based CTE class in the DIGI program where students will learn the basics of DSLR camera operation, while improving their compositions, learn about lighting and develop their own style. Students will keep a sketchbook for ideas and inspiration,  take photographs during class time and outside of class and complete a portfolio as a professional website.  They will learn industry standard programs such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and will have the opportunity to study historical and contemporary photographers and learn from industry experts.  This is a digital class so students must have basic computer skills and be able to work maturely in a computer lab setting. 

    Graphic Arts 1/2

    10th-12th grades

    Graphic Arts is a drawing and computer-based CTE class in the DIGI program where students will learn the history, processes and production of graphic arts and graphic design. Students will focus on skill and composition development while exploring different avenues of visual communication, self-expression and creative problem solving. Integral to the class is a sketchbook that records designs, research, ideas, inspiration and reflections. Students will learn to use industry standard software such as Adobe Illustrator.  As a CTE course, students will participate in hands-on and career related experiences in the form of field trips and visitors from the industry. 

    Digital Media 3/4

    11th-12th grades

    (prerequisite is either Digital Photography 1/2 or Graphic Arts 1/2) 

    Digital Media ¾ is the intermediate class in the DIGI program and is a multimedia class where students will continue to learn digital media skills through various art forms, such as photography, graphic design, web design, illustration and animation.  Students will advance their digital skills while expanding their knowledge in Adobe programs.  They will combine their digital images with analog art making, while working in spaces such as a wet lab darkroom or using screen printing equipment. Students will use historical references, contemporary issues and current trends for inspiration and will continue to focus on creative problem-solving using the design thinking process while continuing to build a professional digital portfolio.  Students who successfully complete this course will have the opportunity to participate in the advanced DIGI class, a student-led design and photography co-lab, where students complete client work.


    Digital Media 5/6

    12th grade

     (prerequisite is Digital Media ¾ or both Photography ½ and Graphic Arts 1/2)

    The advanced Digital Media students are serious about their interest in at least one discipline of digital media production.  This class will function similar to an independent study where students will explore their medium, researching professionals who inspire their focus on career readiness and be organized as a design and photography agency, in the DIGI co-lab, where students will have particular jobs on multiple teams.  Design principles, creative problem solving, historical and contemporary issues in graphics and aesthetics will be analyzed and explored.  Advanced use of multi-digital formats and Adobe programs will be used to create images, compositions and documents for clients. Students will be responsible to recruit work for the class and develop a digital portfolio. This class will also look for partnerships and internships with outside agencies for further real world experience.
