  • This year your child will be learning about many topics which will help her/him become a better reader as well as writer. Among those topics is figurative language. Figurative language is a way of making things more interesting by using words and ideas that do not mean what they say. Simile, metaphor, personification, exaggeration and many other techniques can create a funny or more descriptive situation to paint a picture in the reader's mind.

    In contrast, there is also literal language which means exactly what it says. Literal language certainly has its uses, but for entertaining a reader, figurative language is essential.
