    What is the Passport Club?

Alameda 2nd-5th graders have an opportunity to take a trip around the world with this exciting geography program. The program is primarily a home study program that allows students and their families to embark upon a geographic adventure.

    How does it work?

Each student in grades 2-5 receives a passport (which will be kept at school), chooses a level of study, and collects stamps as they learn some or all of the world’s countries during the course of the year.

At the beginning of each month, students receive a study map, which indicates the countries or geographic landmarks they need to learn by the next Passport Check Day. There are five different levels that students can choose from depending on their ability, interest, and comfort level.

At the end of each month, PASSPORT CHECK DAY is held in the cafetorium. Teachers will bring classes in and students are quizzed in a very friendly and supportive manner by parent/grandparent/guardian volunteers.

What are the 5 levels of study?

There are a possible five levels to be learned each month with anywhere between five and 30 locations per month.

One way to think of the levels is by grade. Therefore, the students in second grade should try to learn Level 1. The program is cumulative so third graders should try to learn Levels 1 & 2.  Fourth graders should try to learn Levels 1, 2, & 3, and fifth graders should try to learn Levels 1, 2, 3, & 4. However, these are only suggestions, not requirements. Use your child as a guide. If they are interested, they might meet their level or surpass it. If they are not interested, don't sweat it. It is not meant to be drudgery or painful!

Level 5 is really for students who are very highly motivated. Level 5 requires students to memorize capital cities of countries learned in the lower levels. Students who do Level 5 (along with all the other levels, of course) all year long and (mostly) master them will have something special at the end of the year.

    Can you lend a hand?

Please consider volunteering for the Passport Club! It runs from 8:45 am - 11:00 am in the cafetorium on the dates listed above. It’s a really fun way to interact with many different kids. We have a blast -- and you can bring a bell or other noisemaker if you have one to celebrate "level 5" with style.  Please do not let your lack of geography knowledge hold you back from volunteering. Volunteers get to have a cheat sheet with them at all times!
