• Course Offerings:

      

    The goal of the Physical Education program is to develop a physically-educated person who has learned the skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities, is physically fit, participates regularly in physical activity, knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activity, has developed social skills resulting in respect for individual differences, and values the contributions of physical activity to a health lifestyle and a healthy community.

     

    Physical Education: Course credit earned: Physical Education (0.5) May be taken only once for credit. No Prerequisite Grade 9 Physically literate students will be involved in a variety of motor activities. These will be individual, and team games such as flag football, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey, and softball. The individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a healthenhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Students will exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. The student will recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

     

    Advanced PE: Course credit earned: Physical Education or Elective (0.5 or 1.0) May be taken more than once for credit. Prerequisite: Freshmen Physical Education Grades 10-12 The students will be involved in a variety of lifetime activities such as volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee and soccer. Emphasis will be placed on skill development/competency, teamwork, and improving fitness levels through activities such as jogging, fitness stations, sprinting and walking. This class is for the student that enjoys any kind of physical activity. Individuals will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Students recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

     

    Weight Training: Course credit earned: Physical Education or Elective (0.5 or 1.0) May be taken more than once for credit. Prerequisite: Freshmen Physical Education Grades 10-12 This elective course is open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors, male or female, who have a strong interest in improving and maintaining a physically-fit lifestyle. A variety of strength and fitness building programs are introduced and developed. This advanced level course highlights student development in the following areas: physical development/fitness, self-confidence, selfimage, social interaction and diversity. Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Individuals will apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

     

    Personal Fitness: Course credit earned: Physical Education or Elective (0.5 or 1.0) May be taken more than once for credit. Prerequisite: Freshmen Physical Education Grades 10-12 Students will learn to identify the benefits of cardiovascular fitness for life long health. Personal fitness assessment and improvement will be stressed. Students will workout in the cardio room on such equipment as stationary bikes and treadmills. Aerobic activities such as walking and jogging will be included. In addition fitness activities involving jump ropes, plyometrics and medicine balls will be incorporated. Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. The student exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. The individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression and/or social interaction.

     

    Health 1: Course credit earned: Health (0.5) May be taken only once for credit. No Prerequisite Grade 9 Students will… - Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. - Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors. - Demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health. - Demonstrate the ability to use decision making skills to enhance health. - Demonstrate the ability to use goal setting skills to enhance health. - Demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. Class discussion and instruction center on wellness and health promotion in the areas of mental health, stress management, depression and anxiety, male and female reproduction, healthy relationships, birth control, suicide prevention, goal setting and the harmful effects of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. Students will work cooperatively together to develop refusal skills and positive decision making skills.

     

    Health 2: Course credit earned: Health (0.5) May be taken only once for credit. Prerequisite: Health 1 Grade 11 Students will… - Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. - Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors - Demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health. - Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. - Demonstrate the ability to use goal setting skills to enhance health. - Demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. - Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health. Health 2 is a course that includes the study, causes and prevention of communicable vs. non-communicable diseases, nutrition and healthy eating, promotion of physical activity, sexual health, environmental health and first aid. Students will learn about the food groups, eating disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, foodborne illnesses and obesity, as well as being a smart consumer and increased awareness of the food industry and practices. Students will develop lifelong fitness goals and learn health principles such as overload, progression and specificity to apply to their daily life.
