  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum Overview for K-3 Families

This year, our K-3 SEL counseling program focuses on helping all students build important skills to manage emotions, solve conflicts, and create positive, respectful relationships in an inclusive and welcoming environment. Here’s a summary of what we’re working on:

    Primary Goals:

    1. Self-Discipline and Self-Control

      • Empower students to recognize and manage strong emotions like frustration or anger in healthy ways.
      • Support students in following routines that promote learning and a sense of belonging.
      • Teach calming strategies such as deep breathing, taking mindful breaks, or seeking help from a trusted adult.
    2. Coping Skills and Problem-Solving

      • Provide tools to help students stay calm and persevere through challenges.
      • Practice techniques such as positive self-talk, identifying solutions, and respectfully asking for support when needed.
    3. Positive Relationships and Empathy

      • Encourage students to build connections with classmates through kindness and respect for individual differences.
      • Help students understand and value diverse perspectives while practicing peaceful conflict resolution.
    4. Impulse Control

      • Teach students how to pause and think before reacting to a situation.
      • Reinforce behaviors that respect others’ space, feelings, and needs, such as taking turns and listening actively.

    How We’re Supporting Your Child:

    • Lessons and Activities

      • Weekly lessons designed to help students understand emotions, resolve conflicts, and show compassion.
      • Activities like storytelling and role-playing that reflect diverse experiences and help students practice inclusion.
      • Group projects to encourage teamwork, celebrate differences, and promote a culture of belonging.
    • Classroom Strategies

      • Calm-down areas equipped with sensory tools, books, and resources to support emotional regulation.
      • Predictable routines that create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
      • Recognition of acts of kindness, collaboration, and cultural appreciation through classroom celebrations.
    • Student Growth Goals

      • By the end of the year, we aim for 80% of students to improve in managing emotions, collaborating respectfully with others, and reducing conflicts. Progress will be measured through classroom observations, teacher notes, and student reflection journals.

How Families Can Support SEL at Home:

    • Celebrate and Discuss Feelings

      • Encourage your child to share their feelings about their day and practice naming their emotions.
      • Create an open environment where all emotions are valued and understood.
    • Model and Practice Problem-Solving

      • Share how you handle challenges respectfully and work through solutions together.
      • Role-play scenarios where your child can practice solving disagreements and honoring others’ perspectives.
    • Uplift Kindness and Respect

      • Celebrate your child’s acts of kindness, inclusivity, and collaboration.
      • Acknowledge and appreciate how they embrace differences and show respect to others.

We believe every student has the ability to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. By working together, we can ensure that every child feels seen, valued, and supported.
