AVID

  • What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s College Readiness System brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.

AVID is for students who would benefit from a supportive family-like environment and the consistent encouragement to stretch their wings and reach their full potential.

For additional information, check out the national AVID website at  or check out our AVID brochure.

What does AVID look like at McDaniel?

McDaniel (as Madison High School) was the first school in Oregon to have AVID in 2005-6.  We are implementing AVID’s College Readiness System school-wide, which means teachers are using AVID strategies in all content areas.  The Cornell note taking system is used in multiple classes and all teachers are using Essential Questions or Learning Targets to help students engage in and interact meaningfully with daily lessons. Reading and writing strategies are used in all grades.  In addition, McDaniel offers an AVID Elective Class at each grade level.

    The AVID Elective Class

McDaniel currently offers 6 sections of AVID.  In 9th and 10th grade, students focus on academic skills. As students transition through AVID 9-12, the focus moves from high school skills to college and scholarship applications, culminating in full focus on college applications, financial aid, and scholarship applications in 12th grade.

Who is eligible for the AVID Elective Class?

The AVID Elective Class is for students willing to work hard in school and enroll in academically challenging classes such as Advanced Placement and Dual Credit Classes.  They may also be the first in their family to go to college, low income or from ethnic groups underrepresented on college campuses.

    AVID Senior Success Videos

Each year McDaniel´s senior AVID students record a video, giving them the opportunity to show how they perceived themselves coming into high school and where they are headed after four years of McDaniel's program.  Please enjoy these past videos of our AVID students and their accomplishments.

    AVID TESTIMONIALS:

It felt pretty wonderful to be part of Madison's AVID Family Night last night. Despite the weather, the vibe was warm and we had 50 parents and 72 students from Madison in attendance, as well as a few staff, students, and parents from Roseway Heights. Our program included pizza, meet and greet, a video of Madison's Casey Ragghianti presenting at Summer Institute. Ben, Alicia, Amanda, Erin, Roberta, and I offered 4 workshops and the families rotated through them, asked questions and provided feedback. We are looking forward to the next AVID event!

Thank you so much for the very informative AVID night, the workshops were really helpful and it gave me a greater understanding of what an amazing program AVID is. Super glad we got Everett involved.

     Thanks again!
