Our 9th Annual IYLC is going virtual!  Recordings from our full day of cultural appreciation, community building and leadership development will be available through June 30, 2021.

The conference is an opportunity for Emergent Bilingual Students grades 9-12 to learn and network with fellow students, educators and language minority leaders in the èßäapp¹ÙÍø area. 

In the morning, students will attend a general assembly and presentation by a keynote speaker - Hmong author Kao Kalia Yang. Students will then choose 3 separate workshops focusing on leadership/communication, preparation for college/career and engaging culture/community.  

PSU will also be providing a virtual campus tour during lunch.

Students will have the chance to win raffle prizes throughout the day.

Announcing the 9th Annual International Youth Leadership Conference

It is my honor to announce that the Humanities Department will soon begin the recruitment process for the 2020-2021 International Youth Leadership Conference student council.

The conference will look different this year as we maintain safety protocols, but will include an online day of facilitated workshops designed to enhance leadership and communication skills, prepare Emergent Bilingual / Multilingual High School students for college and career, and celebrate their contributions to our culture and community.

Whether you are new to the IYLC or have been with us before, I highly encourage you to join us on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 to see how our students shine. Our EBs show up not just as participants, but also as conference organizers, workshop facilitators, and as the dynamic and engaged global citizens that will lead Oregon into the future.

We have found that the EBs who participate in the IYLC, return to their schools with a renewed sense of themselves and a positive outlook on their role in their education. We certainly see this in our IYLC Leadership Council, as individual members work in our high schools to change academic and social outcomes for themselves and their colleagues.

I thank you all for your enthusiasm and support for the IYLC. I truly appreciate your commitment to embracing our Emergent Bilingual students for the added value that they bring to the culture of your schools.
